Relations between Turkey and Luxembourg

Bilateral relations between the Republic of Turkey and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg gained momentum with the opening of a Turkish Embassy in Luxembourg in 1987. The Embassy of Luxembourg in Ankara was inaugurated on 29 November 2011.

His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Henri paid a state visit to Turkey on 18-22 November 2013, upon the invitation of the 11th President of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Abdullah Gül. This was the first state visit from Luxembourg to Turkey since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In addition, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg H.E. Jean-Claude Juncker visited Turkey on 8-9 September 2011 and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg H.E. Jean Asselborn visited Turkey on 21-23 February 2011, 10-11 May 2011,18-22 November 2013 and more recently during their EU Council Term Presidency on 17-18 September 2015. Moreover, Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke, and former Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Jeannot Krecké paid a visit to Turkey, along with a trade delegation, on 21-24 March 2011.

The President of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, then-Prime Minister, visited Luxembourg in November 2004. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Feridun Sinirlioğlu, then-Foreign Minister, visited Luxembourg on 4-5 September 2015 to attend the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers (Gymnich) and held bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Asselborn.

In 2015, bilateral trade volume reached 261 million Dollars (exports: 37, imports: 224). Among the main export goods from Turkey to Luxembourg are plastic and rubber products, textile products, metal products, machines and equipments. Among the main import goods from Luxembourg to Turkey are metals and metal products, machines and equipments, chemical products, plastics, rubber and textile products.

Foreign direct investments via Luxembourg have reached 8.7 billion Dollars between the period 2002-2015. In the same period, foreign direct investments from Turkey to Luxembourg have reached 1.1 billion Dollars.

The Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) established between the two countries have held its first meeting on 21 November 2013 in Istanbul during the Grand Duke Henri’s state visit to Turkey and the second meeting on 27 November 2014 in Luxembourg.

Turkish Airlines (THY) have daily direct flights between the two countries. In 2015, 12.764 tourists from Luxembourg visited Turkey.

Nearly 900 Turkish citizens, 200 of whom has dual citizenship, live in Luxembourg.
