Relations between Turkey and Costa Rica

Costa Rica occupies an important place in Turkey’s outreach policy towards Latin America and the Caribbean. The mutual establishment of Embassies in Ankara and San Jose in 2014 opened a new era in the bilateral relations between Turkey and Costa Rica.

Costa Rican President H.E. Oscar Arias paid an official visit to Turkey in November 2009. Former Foreign Minister H.E. Enrique Castillo Barrantes visited Turkey twice in 2012 and 2013 and his successor Foreign Minister H.E. Manuel Gonzalez Sanz visited Turkey in October 2014.

Foreign Minister H.E. Manuel Gonzalez Sanz participated in the Turkey-Central American Integration System (SICA) Second Foreign Ministers Forum on April 20, 2017 held in İstanbul. During the Forum, Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister H.E. Gonzalez Sanz and cooperation agreements against drug trafficking and cultural cooperation were signed.

Minister of Tourism of Costa Rica H.E. Rica Mauricio Ventura paid a visit to Turkey on December 13-14, 2017. On May 21, 2019, Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had a meeting with H.E Minister Ventura during SICA’s Third Forum of Foreign Ministers held in Guatemala.

The trade volume between the two countries was around 100 million USD in 2019 (Turkey’s exports: 58,9 million Dollars, Turkey’s imports: 41,8 million Dollars).
