NO:95 - 29 May 2008, Press Release Regarding the New Government in Lebanon

We are pleased to learn that the President of the Republic of Lebanon Mr. Michel Suleiman has concluded his consultations with the political groups to determine the new Prime Minister and has appointed the current Prime Minister Mr. Fuad Siniora to form a national unity government.

Prime Minister Siniora’s declaration, during his ongoing efforts for the establishment of the government, that he will work to narrow the gap between rival political groupings and to forge cooperation and solidarity, and his emphasis on the impossibility of solving problems by resorting to violence as well as his call to all parties to heal the open wounds are steps taken in the right direction.

We expect that all parties in Lebanon will take into account these calls of common sense and demonstrate the necessary political maturity to refrain from plunging the country into a new cycle of crisis and clashes, and hope that the new government headed by Mr. Siniora will carry Lebanon to lasting peace and prosperity.
