The 46th Session of the Association Council, the highest decision making organ between Turkey and the EU, will convene in Brussels on 27 May 2008.
At this meeting, which will be Chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan, the latest developments in Turkey`s accession process to the European Union and our reform process will be taken up.
Also at the meeting, various matters related to the performance of the Customs Union will be discussed and financial cooperation and work in the area of adaptation to the acquis will be reviewed.
In Brussels, upon invitations extended to him, Minister Babacan will visit the European Parliament. There he will participate in and make a statement to the 59th Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission, and will also take part in the regular meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, where he will address members of the Committee. While in Brussels Minister Babacan will get together with several EU officials.
Afterwards, on 28 May 2008, Minister Babacan will pay a working visit to Slovakia upon the invitation of the Foreign Minister of Slovakia Jan Kubis. Bilateral relations, as well as our EU membership negotiations and regional and international issues will be discussed during the meetings.
Following the visit to Slovakia, Minister Babacan will go to Sweden to attend the “International Compact with Iraq (ICI)” Annual Review Meeting which will take place in Stockholm on 29 May. Developments in regard to reaching the goals of the ICI, founded last year in Sharm al Sheikh to serve as what can be defined as a comprehensive road map for contributing to the political, economic and social development of Iraq, will be taken up at that meeting. It will be co-chaired by the Swedish Government, Prime Minister of Iraq Nuri Maliki and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
After the Stockholm Conference, Minister Babacan will pay a working visit to the Federal Rebublic of Germany on 30 May 2008 upon the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. In the discussions, besides bilateral relations, Turkey`s EU membership negotiations, and regional and international issues will be taken up. During the course of the visit, the Foundation Agreement on the Turkish-German University, projected to be established in Turkey, will also be signed by Minister Babacan and Minister Steinmeier.
