On July 15, 2016, the treacherous coup attempt orchestrated by the
terrorist organization FETÖ, which targeted democracy, all state
institutions of Türkiye, and its citizens, was thwarted thanks to the
extraordinary dedication and courage of the Turkish people. This incident
revealed a new and unprecedented face of terrorism.
Following this deadly attempt, combating the FETÖ terrorist organization
beyond our borders has become a top priority for the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
The efforts of this terrorist organization—which adheres to no democratic
values or moral principles—to gain political and economic influence are
clearly visible in the countries where FETÖ operates. The same tactics it
employed in Türkiye are also being used elsewhere. As such, this
new-generation terrorist organization poses a threat not only to the
Turkish nation but also to other countries in which it is active.
In an effort to raise international awareness of this threat, the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs remains actively engaged at the global level.
Current efforts focus on closing or transferring schools, foundations, and
associations affiliated with FETÖ, as well as preventing individuals linked
to the organization from establishing a safe haven abroad and evading
justice and the rule of law.
Accordingly, we continue to take measures to prevent these terrorist
entities from using the names “Türkiye,” “Turkish,” or the Turkish flag in
their activities.
As part of the struggle against FETÖ’s educational network, 252 affiliated schools across 22 countries had been taken over by 2024. In addition, more than 200 new schools were established in various countries.
In many countries, FETÖ-linked entities have been banned and their members
expelled. International organizations such as the Organization of Islamic
Cooperation (OIC) have adopted resolutions recognizing FETÖ as a terrorist
organization. Furthermore, in 2018, the Supreme Court of Pakistan
officially designated FETÖ as a terrorist group.
In October 2021, FETÖ was registered as a terrorist organization in a
declaration issued on the occasion of a summit attended by our President
and the Heads of State of Togo, Burkina Faso, and Liberia.
The Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), in its Antalya Declaration dated
January 10, 2023, recalled the 9th and 12th sessions of its General
Assembly held in 2016 and 2019, respectively, and once again reaffirmed its
solidarity and full support for Türkiye in its fight against FETÖ.
