NO:83 - 21 May 2008, Press Release Regarding the Agreement Among the Lebanese Groups (Unofficial Translation)

We are pleased that the talks held among the Lebanese groups under the auspices of the Arab League and the chairmanship of the Prime Minister of Qatar in Doha have produced an agreement ending the political crisis in Lebanon and that the parties have agreed upon the election of the Lebanese President. We hope that this agreement will serve the well-being of the Lebanese people as well as our region.

After this stage, the intention and determination of the parties in Lebanon to act in compromise and on the basis of legitimacy by giving priority to national interests and the continued encouragement of the parties by the international community will play a significant role in making this agreement an enduring one.

Turkey spent considerable efforts to diffuse the crisis in Lebanon, which emerged roughly a year and a half ago and recently turned into armed clashes, and conveyed in her contacts with both the Lebanese groups and the regional countries that the crisis should be overcome by dialogue and compromise.

We reiterate our hope that this agreement will end the suffering and pain of the Lebanese people and underline our determination to continue our support in the days ahead for the establishment of an environment of peace, tranquility and stability in Lebanon.
