The Summit Meeting Between North and South Koreas (Unofficial Translation) No:97 - June 16, 2000

We welcome the summit meeting between Mr. Kim Dae-jung, President of the Republic of Korea and Mr. Kim Jong-il, leader of the People's Democratic Republic of Korea on 13-15 June 2000, in Pyonyang.

We consider this summit meeting as a very important step towards the achieving of dialogue, reconciliation and cooperation between South Korea and North Korea and we believe that this development will have positive repercussions not only in the Korean Peninsula but also at the regional and global levels.

We congratulate the leaders and governments of South Korea and North Korea for the realization of this summit and wish sincerely that the concrete steps envisaged in the Joint Declaration published after the meeting which are aimed at the development of understanding and cooperation and the achieving of peaceful reunificaiton between the two Koreas lead to successful results.
