NO:89 -;8 June 2007, Press Release Regarding the Adopting of a Resolution Supporting Unfounded Armenian Allegations of Senate of Chile (Unofficial Translation)

It is learnt with regret that the Senate of Chile unanimously adopted a resolution supporting unfounded Armenian allegations on 5 June 2007.

The content of the resolution is contrary to the historical facts and based on completely inaccurate information such as the recognition of “the Armenian genocide” in 1985 by the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities. As is known, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon elucidated the assertion expressed rather frequently by the Armenian circles in his speech delivered on 30 April 2007 and stated that the UN has taken no position with regard to the events of 1915 up until now.

We strongly condemn and reject the said resolution that distorts the history for political purposes. We regard the resolution adopted by the Senate of Chile as an act casting a shadow on friendly relations between the two countries.

Our disappointment and concerns with regard to the resolution adopted by the Senate of Chile are being conveyed by the Ministry and the Turkish Embassy in Santiago, both in Ankara and in Santiago.
