Bilateral Political Relations between Türkiye and Kuwait

Türkiye and Kuwait, which gained its independence in 1961, celebrated the 50 th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations in 2014. Türkiye enjoys multifaceted relations with Kuwait based on common cultural and historical ties.

Türkiye’s bilateral relations with Kuwait have gained impetus in recent years through high-level visits and numerous agreements signed during those visits. In this respect, five visits at the level of head of state took place between the two countries in 2017. In 2018, the Emir of Kuwait H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah attended the OIC Extraordinary Summit on Al-Quds in Istanbul. The Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, H.E. Marzouq Ali Al Ghanim, visited Türkiye, in order to attend the presidential inauguration of H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 9 July 2018 and the Third Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments held in Antalya on 8-11 October 2018.

The first meeting of the Joint Committee for Cooperation, established at the level of Foreign Ministers, was held on 24 October 2013 in Kuwait. The second meeting of the aforementioned Committee is expected to be convened in Türkiye.

The fifth round of the political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries were held on 15 October 2018 in Kuwait under the co-chairmanship of Ambassador Sedat Önal, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye and Walid El Kubeyzi, Deputy Minister for European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait.
