Turkey - Maldives Political Relations

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and the Maldives were established in 1979. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi is accredited to the Maldives and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva is accredited to Turkey.

Turkey and the Maldives are two friendly states in close cooperation at several international platforms, the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in particular.

Prime Minister Erdoğan’s visit to the Maldives on 9 February 2005 in the aftermath of the earthquake and the tsunami disaster in South East Asia on 26 December 2004 was the first official visit from Turkey to the Maldives since the establishment of diplomatic relations. Foreign Minister of the Maldives Mr Abdulla Shahid’s visit to Turkey on 15-21 April 2008 was the first official visit from the Maldives to Turkey.

On different occasions during 2009, Dr. Mohamed Shareef, Deputy Minister of Housing, Transport and Environment, Mr Ameen Faisal, Minister of Defence and National Security, Mr Mohamed Rasheed, Minister of Economic Development and Dr Musthafa Luthfy, Minister of Education of Maldives visited Turkey. Same year in May, Mr Nevzat Pakdil, Acting Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, accompanied by a group of Deputies and 30 businessmen visited the Maldives.

On 18 January 2010, Prime Minister Erdoğan met with Mr Mohamed Nasheed, President of the Maldives in the margins of the Third World Future Energy Summit organized in Abu Dhabi, where they exchanged views on the ways to develop bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of tourism and defence. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu met with Foreign Minister of Maldives Mrs Dunya Maumoon in New York in September 2014 on the sidelines of 69 th Session of UN General Assembly and in Kuwait in May 2015 in the margins of OIC 42nd Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Mr Ameen Faisal, Minister of Defence and National Security of Maldives visited Turkey on 15-17 September 2010 and Mr Ahmed Naseem, Foreign Minister of Maldives paid a visit to Turkey in order to participate in the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries held in Istanbul, in May 2011. Mr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs attended the Presidential handover ceremony in Turkey on 28 August 2014 and Mr. Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, Speaker of the People’s Majlis paid a visit to Turkey in order to participate in the 10th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) held in Istanbul, on 17-22 January 2015.

The latest visit from Maldives to Turkey was the visit of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim on 28-29 August 2017. During the visit, bilateral meetings between two countries were held.
