Turkey - Iran Relations

Iran is a neighbour with which Turkey shares 560 km’s long border, unchanged for almost 400 years. In addition to the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, there are also Turkish Consulates General in Tabriz, Orumiyeh and Mashhad. Iran is represented in Turkey by its Embassy in Ankara, and its Consulates General in İstanbul, Trabzon and Erzurum.

Turkish-Iranian bilateral relations are evolving on the basis of the principles of non-interference in domestic affairs, mutual respect and good neighborliness. Efforts are made to further enhance the political dialogue both on bilateral and regional issues, through reciprocal visits and mechanisms such as High Level Cooperation Council and joint commissions in different sectors.

The Turkish-Iranian High Level Cooperation Council (HLCC) which was established in 2014, has provided a structured basis to the Turkish-Iranian relations. The first meeting of the HLCC was held in Ankara on 9 June 2014 during the visit of H.E. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Turkey, the second one on 7 April 2015 during the visit of H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey to Iran and the third on the occasion of the visit of H.E. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Turkey on 16 April 2016. Lastly, on the occasion of the visit of H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey to Iran on 4 October 2017, the fourth meeting of the HLCC was realized.

H.E Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran paid another visit to Turkey on 13 December 2017 on the occasion of Extraordinary Session of the OIC Islamic Summit Conference and had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey .

At the level of Prime Ministers, H.E. Eshaq Jahangiri, First Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, visited Turkey on 19 October 2017 upon the invitation of H.E Binali Yıldırım, Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey. Following the meetings in Ankara, H.E Jahangiri also attended to the D-8 Summit in Istanbul on 20 October 2017. H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu, then the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, paid a visit to Tehran on 4-5 March 2016 upon the invitation of H.E. Eshaq Jahangiri, First Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. At the level of Foreign Ministers, H.E. Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran visited Turkey on 7 June 2017 and H.E Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkey paid a visit to Iran on 26 November 2016.

Lastly, border security, fight against terrorism and organized crimes were discussed during reciprocal visits of Chiefs of General Staff of two countries and the visit of the Minister of Interior Affairs of the Republic of Turkey to Iran.
