Meeting of Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu with Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein of Iraq, 16 December 2020

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had a meeting in Ankara with Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein of Iraq on 16 December 2020.

During the meeting to prepare the official visit of Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, Prime Minister of Iraq to Turkey on 17 December 2020 upon the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, bilateral relations and regional developments were discussed.

Following the meeting, the two Ministers held a joint press conference.

Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that we fully supported Iraq's territorial integrity and political unity, that we were approaching the trade volume target of 20 billion US Dollars, that a roadmap was being prepared for having visa liberalization between the two countries once again and that we would further our cooperation against the PKK terrorist organization.

Later that day, Minister Çavuşoğlu held a meeting with United Nations’s Senior Official on Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute, and stated that the federation project was no longer sustainable.

Minister Çavuşoğlu also emhasized that in line with the realities on the Island, the Turkish side promoted two-state settlement based on equal sovereignty, and that a common ground should be reached for a new negotiation process.
