Relations between Türkiye and Tanzania

Turkish Embassy in Dar es Salaam was opened in 1979. Albeit, it was closed down in 1984 due to budgetary constraints, it was re-opened on 18 May 2009.

Bilateral relations gained momentum with the visit of the former President of the Republic of Türkiye, H.E. Abdullah Gül to the United Republic of Tanzania in February 2009 and the re-opening of the Turkish Embassy in Dar es Salaam in the same year.

H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania paid a state visit to Türkiye in 2010. Kikwete’s visit to Türkiye was an important step since it was the first-presidential level visit from Tanzania to Türkiye and reflected the momentum gained in bilateral relations.

The former President of Zanzibar H.E. Ali Mohamed Shein paid an official visit to Türkiye between in 2011.

H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Tanzania on 22-23 January 2017, accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy and Natural Resources and Economy. During the visit, 10 agreements were signed which provide the legal basis of our relations in the fields of defense industry, education, development, health, tourism, defense industry economy and communication.

The first meeting of the Türkiye-Tanzania Joint Economic Commission took place in 2012 in Dar es Salaam. On the occasion of the Meeting, two countries reviewed bilateral economic relations and evaluated additional possibilities of cooperation.

The second JEC meeting between Tanzania and Türkiye was held in Ankara on 11-12 January 2017.

The trade volume between the two countries was 250 million USD in 2020. The establishment of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Tanzania and the launching of Turkish Airlines’ direct flights between Istanbul-Dar es Salaam in 2010 and Istanbul-Kılımanjaro in 2012 provided significant momentum to the bilateral economic relations between the two countries.
