Relations between Türkiye and Mali

Relations between Türkiye and Mali are in an advanced level and have been further reinforced with the visits of President of the Republic of Mali, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mali in past few years.

The visit of H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of the Republic of Türkiye to Mali on 2 March 2018 carried a historical significance as being the first visit from Türkiye to Mali at the Presidential level. In total, 8 agreements were signed on the occasion of the visit.

First step to develop the relations between Türkiye and Mali was taken in 1998. In this regard, a delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye has paid a visit to Bamako between 26th and 30th of September 1998 together with a delegation of the Presidency of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Mali has been opened in 1 February 2010 and the Ambassador of Türkiye presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic of Mali on 5 February 2010.

The first Ambassador of Mali to Türkiye was assigned with a Decree of the Council of Ministers of 6 May 2014. After arriving in Ankara on 9 June 2014 and making his first contacts, Ambassador Soumaré has presented his credentials to the President of Türkiye on 27 June 2014.

One of the components of the relations between Türkiye and Mali is humanitarian and development aid in general. Within this framework, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency-TIKA have realized various projects. TIKA will continue to carry out new cooperation projects in the coming period as well.

The launch of Turkish Airlines direct flights to Bamako with a frequency of 3 times a week in May 2015 has been an important turning point in respect of commercial and economic relations between Türkiye and Mali. Currently Turkish Airlines is flying seven times a week to Bamako.

Türkiye’s economic relations with Mali are further improving day by day. Trade volume between the two countries, which was about 5 million dollars in 2003, raised to 57 million US Dollars in 2019. (Export: 48,4 million US Dollars, import. 8,6 million US Dollars)

Turkish Maarif Foundation has schools in Mali.

Since 1992, Türkiye provides government scholarships for Malian students.
