Relations between Türkiye and Malawi

Türkiye established diplomatic relations with Malawi after Malawi declared its independence on 6 July 1964. Turkish Embassy in Nairobi was accredited to Malawi in 1971.

Since 2011, Turkish Embassy in Lusaka is accredited to Malawi. Efforts are underway to open the Embassy in Lilongwe. Malawi is represented in Türkiye through its Embassy in Berlin.

Relations between Türkiye and Malawi remains limited in intensity. Various Ministers and Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Malawi has visited Türkiye on the occasions of international events. There has not been an official visit from Turkey to Malawi at the level of Ministers and at Presidential level.

Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement has been signed in Lilongwe on 5th of October 2006.

MoU between Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board DEIK and Malawi Trade Confederation was signed in 2016.

Total volume of trade between Türkiye and Malawi has been worth 27,25 million US Dollars in 2021. Turkish exports to Malawi was 4,63 million US Dollars as imports from Malawi was 22,62 million US Dollars.

Türkiye’s main export items to Malawi are machine parts, iron/steel tanks, aluminium bars and profiles, prefabricated structures and machinery. Türkiye’s regular import items from Malawi are tobacco and tobacco products.

Through Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Türkiye is providing development assistance to Malawi in various domains.

94 Malawian students have benefitted from Türkiye scholarships since 1992. Currently 32 Malawian students are continuing their studies in Türkiye.
