Relations between Türkiye and France

Our NATO ally, France, is an important trade and economic partner with whom we have a deep-rooted relationship for nearly five centuries.

Indeed, diplomatic relations between Türkiye and France date back to 1483. Jean de la Forest, the first French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, took office in 1535. With the capitulations in 1535, France became the most privileged state in the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire appointed its first ambassador, Yirmisekiz Mehmet Çelebi, to France in 1721.

The Treaty of Ankara, signed on 20 October 1921, during the Turkish War of Independence, is the basis of Türkiye-France bilateral relations.

Upon the invitation of President Macron, President Erdoğan paid a bilateral official visit to France on 5 January 2018.

Former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna visited Türkiye on 5 September 2022.

The number of registered Turkish citizens living in France is 782,690 out of an estimated total of 887,000. The number of dual nationals is estimated at around 390,000.
