Our NATO ally, France, is an important trade and economic partner with whom
we have a deep-rooted relationship for nearly five centuries.
Indeed, diplomatic relations between Türkiye and France date back to 1483.
Jean de la Forest, the first French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, took
office in 1535. With the capitulations in 1535, France became the most
privileged state in the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire appointed its
first ambassador, Yirmisekiz Mehmet Çelebi, to France in 1721.
The Treaty of Ankara, signed on 20 October 1921, during the Turkish War of
Independence, is the basis of Türkiye-France bilateral relations.
Upon the invitation of President Macron, President Erdoğan paid a bilateral
official visit to France on 5 January 2018.
Former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna visited Türkiye on 5
September 2022.
The number of registered Turkish citizens living in France is 782,690 out
of an estimated total of 887,000. The number of dual nationals is estimated
at around 390,000.
