Relations between Türkiye and Benin are developing on a sound basis. During
the two visits made by President Talon to Türkiye in 2016 and 2018,
delegations led by President Erdoğan and President Talon discussed in
detail ways of furthering cooperation between the two countries. The visit
of President Talon to Türkiye in 2016 was a strong support to Türkiye in the
aftermath of the failed coup of July 2016.
Türkiye and Benin’s willingness to develop relations can also be seen by the
opening of Embassies in both countries. The Beninese Embassy in Ankara
opened in 2013, whereas the Turkish Embassy opened in Cotonou in 2014.
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has finalized many
projects in Benin, mainly in the agricultural sector. TİKA has also
completed the building and full equipment of a health center in the region
of Adjohoun. It was handed over to the Beninese Health Ministry in 2018.
Bilateral trade is expanding with a volume of 142 million Dollars in 2019.
Türkiye is providing scholarships to students from Benin as part of the
Türkiye Scholarships program.
Turkish Airlines flights between Istanbul and Cotonou started in 2014.
