Relations between Turkey and the Philippines

Turkey’s formal diplomatic relations with the Philippines is set on 13 June 1949 and Turkish Embassy in Manila opened on 17 October 1990.

Turkey and the Philippines have long-standing relations, which have developed remarkably in a wide range of areas in recent years.

Turkish Airlines began flying directly to Manila in March 2015, providing an opportunity for closer people-to-people links. Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) provides a significant link between the two countries in the area of socio-economic development cooperation. In April 2015, TIKA opened its Manila office tasked to cover the whole of the Philippines.

Turkey is among the members of both International Contact Group, supporting the peace process between the Government of Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and the Peace Committee for South Philippines, established within the OIC to support the peace process between the Government of Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). Turkey has also contributed to the peace process in South Philippines by assuming the Chairmanship of the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) since its establishment.

The number of Turkish citizens registered to be resident in the Philippines is around 500. Approximately, 2.200 Filipino nationals are residents in Turkey. Under Turkiye Scholarships, 72 Filipino students are awarded Türkiye Scholarship to study in Turkish universities. In 2017-2018 academic year, Turkey provided 15 scholarships to Filipino students.
