Relations between Turkey and Myanmar

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Myanmar were established in 1958. The Turkish Embassy in Bangkok was accredited to Myanmar until the Embassy in Myanmar came into operation on 9 March 2012. Myanmar does not have a resident Embassy in Turkey. The Myanmarese Embassy in Cairo is accredited to Turkey.

Turkey wishes to develop bilateral relations with Myanmar in all fields.

After the opening of the Embassy in Myanmar, H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu, then in his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Myanmar twice in 2012 and 2013.

H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey paid a bilateral visit to Myanmar on 12-14 June 2016. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu is the first OIC Foreign Minister visited Myanmar since the formation of the new Government in Myanmar following the elections in October 2015.

There are two war cemeteries of Turkish soldiers who were captured by the British during WWI. These soldiers were brought to Myanmar and lost their life in this country that was once a British colony. One of them (in Thayet) is reconstructed and restoration process of the other (Meikhtila) is expected to start in near future.

Turkey attaches significant importance to the situation of the Muslims in Myanmar, in particular Rohingya. Turkey has been closely monitoring the situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar since 2012 and has expressed its deep concern about the ongoing humanitarian crisis, which has already led to the exodus of more than 730.000 Rohingya to Bangladesh. Turkey has also been playing a leading role in all relevant international bodies to draw the attention of the international community to the humanitarian plight in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Turkey has always had a constructive approach to the situation of Rohingya with a focus on the humanitarian aspect of this issue. Therefore Turkey maintains its dialogue with the Governments of Myanmar in order to contribute to the lasting solution of the crisis.

As a friend of Myanmar, Turkey continues to provide humanitarian and development assistance to those in need in Myanmar. Turkey has also been working closely with international organizations like UNICEF, UNHCR and IOM on humanitarian aid projects.
