Relations between Turkey and Mauritania

There is no political dispute between Turkey and Mauritania. Cooperation between the two countries is increasingly improving. Relations between the two nations go back to the Ottoman period.

The number of high level contacts on both bilateral and multilateral platforms has increased with our country’s Opening up to Africa Policy.

H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ould Abdel Azziz, President of Mauritania has officially visited Turkey between 21 and 25 January 2010. Within the framework of the decisions taken during the visit, Mauritania has opened its Embassy in Ankara in November 2010 and our Embassy in Nouakchott has started to function on 15 April 2011.

Mauritania has participated in the first Turkey-Africa Cooperation Summit which was held in Istanbul in August 2008 with a delegation headed by H.E. Mr. Abdellahi Ould Benhmeyda, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mauritania. H.E. Mr. Benhmeyda was also received by our President.

Studies carried out in order to strengthen the contractual basis between the two countries have accelerated in recent years.

Our Government has been allocating higher education scholarships to the Government of Mauritania each year.
