Relations between Turkey and Guinea

The Embassies of the two countries were mutually opened in the beginning of 2013.

Our President’s visit for the first time on March 3, 2016 made a historic progress within our bilateral relations and 9 agreements / memoranda of understanding were signed during the visit.

Following the visit in 2016, the President of the Republic of Guinea, Alpha Condé, attended the 13th Islamic Summit of the OIC on 14th-15th of April. He paid an official visit to our country between 26-30 December 2016. During the said visit, seven agreements / memorandums of understanding were signed.

In 2017, President Condé, in his capacity as Chairman of the African Union attended Turkey-Africa First Agriculture Ministers Conference and Agriculture Business Forum held between 27-28 April 2017 and had a bilateral meeting with our President Erdoğan in Istanbul on April 28.

Subsequently attended the D-8 Summit held in Istanbul on 20 October and then the OIC Islamic Extraordinary Summit held on 13 December 2017.

Thus, President Condé, who attended the UN 4th Least Developed Countries (LDC) Conference in Istanbul in 2011, visited our country 6 times in 2016 and 2017, following the visit of our President to Guinea in March 2016.

Bilateral talks were held between Foreign Ministers on 14 and 15 April 2016 during the 13th Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the 13th Islamic Summit of Foreign Ministers and during the official visit of President Condé to our country. Finally, our Minister met Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Guineans Abroad, Mamadi Touré during the Turkey-Africa Second Ministerial Review Conference held on 11-12 February 2018.

It is carried out that economic and trade relations between Turkey and Guinea are run under the Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed in 1997. The first Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting was held in Conakry between 12-14 June 2002 and the second between 16-18 April 2013 in Ankara. The third JEC meeting is expected to be held in Conakry in 2018.

The Turkish-Guinea Business Council was established during our President’s official visit to Guinea on 3rd March 2016. During the said visit a business forum as well was organized by the Foreign Economic Relations Board. The second business forum was held in Istanbul on the occasion of the official visit of President Condé to our country between 26-30 December 2016.

Likewise, another business forum was organized in Conakry on the occasion of the visit of Guinea-Turkey Exporters Assembly (TIM) Businessmen Delegation, held between 27-30 March 2017.

Turkish businessmen mostly operate in construction and service sectors in Guinea. After President Erdoğan's visit on 3 March 2016, businesspersons’ interest in infrastructure, transport, energy and mining sectors in Guinea has increased.

The trade volume between Turkey and Guinea in 2017 reached 101.8 million dollars (Exports: 86.2 million dollars, Imports: 15.6 million dollars).

Since 30 January 2017, Turkish Airlines has been operating two flights a week between Istanbul and Conakry. Apparently, flights have made a significant contribution to the development of trade and economic relations between the two countries.

Through Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Turkey is providing development assistance to Guinea in various domains. For further detail, please visit http://www.tika.gov.tr/en.

Turkey has provided 20 scholarships to students from Guinea for the 2017-2018 academic period, as part of the Turkey Scholarships program. Since 1992, 171 scholarships have been granted to Guinean students.
