Relations Between Turkey and Eritrea

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on July 1993.

Turkish Embassy in Asmara was opened in November 2013. Eritrea’s Embassy in Doha is accredited to Turkey. Eritrea does not have an Honorary Consulate in Turkey.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Eritrea Osman Mohammed Saleh visited Turkey on 16 December 2011 on the occasion of “Turkey-Africa Partnership Ministerial Level Mid-Term Review
Conference” which was held in Istanbul.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu visited Asmara on 16 November 2012 and held talks with his counterparts on bilateral issues as well as regional matters.

After the opening of the Turkish Embassy in Asmara, Turkish Airlines began direct flights between Istanbul and Asmara as of August 2014.

The first political consultations between Turkey and Eritrea was held on 9-10 March 2016 in Asmara.

Turkish-Eritrean annual bilateral trade volume stood at about 17,9 million US Dollars in 2016. The main export products from Turkey to Eritrea are electrical household goods, foodstuff and apparels. On the other hand, Turkish imports from Eritrea was around 2,3 million US Dollars in 2016. The trade volume between Turkey and Eritrea was approximately 15 million US Dollars during the first 11 months of 2017.
 
Turkey, within the framework of Türkiye Scholarships, provided 25 higher education scholarships to Eritrea in the 2017-2018 academic year.
