Relations between Turkey and Costa Rica

Costa Rica occupies an important place in Turkey’s outreach policy towards Latin America and the Caribbean. The mutual establishment of embassies in Ankara and San Jose in 2014 opened a new era in the bilateral relations between Turkey and Costa Rica.

Costa Rican President H.E. Oscar Arias conducted an official visit to Turkey in November 2009. Former Foreign Minister H.E. Enrique Castillo Barrantes visited Turkey twice in 2012 and 2013. Foreign Minister Manuel Gonzalez Sanz also visited Turkey in October 2014.

In February 2015 Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to Guatemala in order to participate in the Turkey-Central American Integration System (SICA) Foreign Ministers Forum. During the visit Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu signed the agreement granting Turkey extra-regional observer status in SICA.

The trade volume between the two countries was around 100 million dollars in 2015 (Exports from Turkey to Costa Rica: 48 million Dollars, Imports of Turkey from Costa Rica: 50 million Dollars).
 
The Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation between the Diplomacy Academies was signed on 30 October 2012. 5 junior Costa Rican diplomats attended so far the “International Junior Diplomats Training Program” which is being organized by the Turkish Diplomacy Academy since 1992.
