Relations Between Turkey and Burundi

The Embassy of Burundi in Ankara was opened in June 2014. Turkish Embassy in Bujumbura was opened in December 2018.

The President of Burundi attended the 2nd Istanbul-Somalia Conference held in Istanbul in June 2012 in cooperation with UN. During his visit to Turkey, the President also met with the President and Prime Minister of Turkey.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mr.Laurent Kavakure participated in the Presidential hand-over ceremony held in Ankara on 28 August 2014.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Burundi Mr.Alain Aimé Nyamitwe, paid an official visit to Turkey on 13-16 June 2017. This visit was the first official visit from Burundi at the level of Foreign Minister. A number of Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding were signed in several areas during this visit.

Speaker of the Burundi National Assembly Pascal Nyabenda made an official visit to Turkey between 20-23 February 2018 accompanied by a parliamentary delegation. During his visit, he was received by H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey.

The bilateral trade volume between Burundi and Turkey in 2018 is around 2,6 million USD (export from Turkey: 2.5 USD; import to Turkey: 100.000 USD).

Turkey, within the framework of ‘‘Türkiye Scholarships’’, offers, scholarships for higher education in Turkey to Burundian students. In 2018 22 students were granted scholarships. Total number of scholarships provided to Burundian students since 1992 is 155.

Additionally, Burundian diplomats have joined the International Training Programme for Junior Diplomats since 2012, which has been held regularly by the Diplomacy Academy of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
