Relations Between Turkey and Burundi

The Turkish Embassy in Kampala/Uganda is accredited to Burundi. The Embassy of Burundi was opened in Ankara in June 2014.

Vice President of Burundi Gervais Rufyikiri attended the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries took place on 9 -13 May 2011 in Istanbul and met Turkish President on the sidelines of the meeting.

The President of Burundi attended the 2nd Istanbul-Somalia Conference held in Istanbul in June 2012. During his visit to Turkey, the President also met the President and Prime Minister of Turkey

The Development Partners Conference on Burundi took place on 29-30 October 2012 in Geneva. The vice-President of Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Mehmet Süreyya Er represented Turkey at the Conference.

In 2012, Turkey became a member of the “Burundi Configuration” established in 2006 under the Peacebuilding Commission.

Foreign Minister Laurent Kavakure participated in the Presidential hand-over ceremony held in Ankara on 28 August 2014.

The bilateral trade volume between Burundi and Turkey in 2015 is 3 million USD (export from Turkey: 2,5 million USD; import to Turkey: 41.000 USD).

Turkey, within the framework of Türkiye Scholorships, offers, scholorships for higher education in Turkey to Burundian students. Additionally, Burundian diplomats have joined the International Training Programme for Junior Diplomats since 2012, which has been held regularly by the Diplomacy Academy of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
