QA:6 - 25 February 2008, Statement of the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey in Response to a Question (Unofficial Translation)

Turkey believes that in the troubled and crisis ridden Middle East region, the establishment of an environment of dialogue and mutual understanding carries vital importance in the quest for stability and peace in the region. Within this framework, certain unconstructive remarks of Iranian authorities concerning Israel in recent days are regrettable.

Turkey will continue to support and contribute to the formation of an environment of peace and stability in the Middle East through reconciliation and dialogue. In this context, we will be actively involved in efforts aimed at the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which constitutes the core of the problems in the region, as well as the foundation of a Palestinian state that will live side by side with Israel within recognized and secure borders.

We anticipate that other regional countries will also take a constructive approach in regard to the settlement of all the regional problems, first and foremost the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and without further loss of time, the establishment of a lasting peace. Regional countries should refrain from conduct that is not compatible with the due respect that has to be shown to all members of the international community.
