Elections regarding the renewal of 10 members of GREVIO, the monitoring
mechanism of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating
Violence against Women and Domestic Violence were held in Strasbourg on 1
April 2019 and Turkey’s candidate Prof. Dr. Aşkın Asan was elected to
GREVIO membership.
The Convention, also known as the Istanbul Convention, was opened for
signature in Istanbul in 2011 during Turkey’s Chairmanship of the Committee
of Ministers of the Council of Europe and entered into force on 1 August
2014. Turkey was the first country to sign and ratify the Istanbul
Convention.
We welcome the presence of Prof. Asan among the independent experts of
GREVIO as a demonstration of the strong ties between the Istanbul
Convention and Turkey.
Turkey will continue to actively contribute to the efforts regarding the
implementation and promotion of the Istanbul Convention, which represents
the highest standards on women’s rights in international law and will
further pursue a pioneering role in this field.
