No:220 - 27 December 2008, Press Release Regarding the Recent Developments in the Gaza Strip (Unofficial Translation)
We are deeply concerned about the incidents in the Gaza Strip. We strongly condemn the high number of Palestinian deaths caused by the Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
These developments in the Gaza Strip may have serious negative implications on the stability of the region. The fact that civilians may also suffer greatly from the present situation is causing concern. The high number of loss of lives caused by the operation and the possibility of an increase in the spiral of violence has caused concern and indignation.
We call upon Israel to act in continence and bring the military operation to an immediate halt.
In order to prevent a humanitarian tragedy, it is vital that the flow of humanitarian goods to the Gaza Strip continues uninterrupted and the blockade is lifted. We call upon the international community not to remain indifferent to such a tragedy and to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Turkey will sustain her efforts towards the parties for bringing an end to the fighting and the restoration of calm, and at the same time, persistently continue its humanitarian assistance, particularly in the form of food and medical aid to Gaza.
