We learned with deep sorrow that Chokri Belaid, one of the prominent political figures of Tunisia, lost his life following an armed attack outside his home in Tunis on 6 February 2013. We ask Allah to have mercy upon him and present our condolences to his family and to the brotherly people of Tunisia.

We strongly condemn this hateful attack which appears to be an act of provocation intending to damage the healthy democratic process in Tunisia. We call upon all parties to act in a sense of responsibility and restraint to prevent any harm to the advances garnered in democracy as well as the ongoing process.

Turkey will continue to support the friendly and brotherly people of Tunisia in every field and will act in solidarity and cooperation with Tunisia in its struggle for democracy.
