No: 288, 18 November 2016, Press Release Regarding the Election of New Secretary General of Organization of Islamic Cooperation

The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held an Extraordinary Meeting in Mecca on 17 November 2016. During this Extraordinary Meeting, the Final Communique of the OIC Executive Committee dated 5 November 2016, which strongly condemned the ballistic missile attack against Mecca by Houthi-Saleh militias was confirmed and Yousef Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, nominated by Saudi Arabia, was unanimously elected as the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in place of Iyad Madani who resigned recently.

As the Summit Term President of the OIC, Turkey congratulates the newly elected Secretary General Al-Othaimeen and wishes him success.

Turkey emphasizes that it will support the Secretary General in his efforts for resolution of the problems faced by the Islamic world, and for improving cooperation and development among Islamic countries by defending joint causes, mainly Palestine.

On this occasion, Turkey expresses gratitude to the resigned Secretary General Madani for his contributions to the works of the Organization.
