No: 284, 16 December 2010, Press Release Regarding the Political Situation in the Cote d’Ivoire

The Presidential elections, which were postponed many times until today, and in which the people of Cote d’Ivoire widely participated in the hope of bringing an end to the ongoing political crisis of the past ten years, have been concluded on the 28th November 2010, revealing the legitimate political choice of the Ivorian people. The UN has confirmed that Alassane Dramane Ouattara is the winner of the elections.

Turkey is following with concern the emergence of two administrations in the Cote d’Ivoire, following former President Laurent Gbagbo’s announcement of an electoral victory. Turkey calls upon all sides to recognise the legitimate outcome of the elections, which resulted in Ouattara’s victory, and respect the democratic choice of the Ivorian people.

The opening of the Turkish Embassy in Abidjan is a token of the importance attributed by Turkey to the unity, integrity, peace and stability of friendly Cote d’Ivoire, as well as of Turkey’s confidence in Cote d’Ivoire’s ability to complete its democratic process and return to its bright days.

Turkey will continue to support Cote d’Ivoire’s efforts to bring stability and security to the country.
