No: 279, 6 December 2011, Press Release Regarding the Judgment of the International Court of Justice on Greece’s vetoing Macedonia’s NATO membership

The International Court of Justice, the principle judicial organ of the UN, delivered on 5 December 2011 its Judgment regarding the case filed by Macedonia on the ground that Greece breached its obligations under Article 11 of the Interim Accord signed between the two countries on 13 September 1995, by vetoing the Republic of Macedonia’s NATO membership at the NATO Bucharest Summit held in 2008.

The International Court of Justice concluded that Greece has breached the Interim Accord. We welcome the abovementioned judgment with the expectation that it will accelerate Macedonia’s efforts to integrate with the European and Euro-Atlantic institutions and provide a support to it on a legal basis.

As one of the first countries of the international community recognizing Macedonia with its constitutional name and national identity, and opening an Embassy in Skopje, Turkey believes that a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and democratic Macedonia is of great importance for the peace and stability in the Balkans.

Turkey will continue to support Macedonia to accomplish its integration process with the European and Euro-Atlantic institutions without delay.
