No: 169, 2 August 2010, Press Release Regarding the Establishment of an International Panel in accordance with the UN Security Council Presidential Statement

We are pleased that the UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon has established an international panel in accordance with the UN Security Council Presidential Statement of June 1, 2010, to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into Israel’s raid on May 31, 2010, on the humanitarian aid convoy sailing in international waters. We appreciate the Secretary General’s enduring and intense efforts and his resolve to this end. We therefore consider today’s announcement of the establishment of the inquiry panel as a step in the right direction.

It is imperative that the inquiry to be launched is prompt, impartial, credible, transparent and conforms to the international standards, in a manner consistent with the letter and spirit of the UNSC Presidential Statement. We believe that the panel will function effectively and that all its members will act with impartiality and responsibility that is incumbent upon them. We hope that the results of the inquiry will contribute significantly not only to the much needed peace and tranquility in the region, but also help entrench the culture of respect for international law and prevent the recurrence of similar violations.

We have full confidence in the Secretary General with regard to the efficient conduct of the panel’s work. Naturally, Turkey will provide the necessary contributions to this end.

On the other hand, it is expected that the activities of the Fact Finding Mission established in accordance with the UN Human Rights Council resolution of June 2, 2010, are complementary to this initiative of the Secretary General.

Aiming at achieving stability, peace and security for all in its region, Turkey will continue its efforts with the same determination it has shown thus far. Our hope is that all countries act with this understanding.
