MIKTA Statement on Natural Disasters in Turkey, 8 September 2021

We, the Foreign Ministers of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia – comprising MIKTA – are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the forest fires and floods affecting various regions of Turkey and other parts of Europe in July and August 2021.

We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and our hopes for a quick recovery to all those affected. We stand in full solidarity with the Governments and the peoples of Turkey and others across Europe in the aftermath of these disasters.

Around the world, we are experiencing the impacts of climate change, including disaster events resulting from changing fire weather and shifting rainfall patterns, among other phenomena. We reaffirm the collective will for urgent global climate action.
