Joint Statement Following The Meetıng Of The Presidents Of The Republic Of Turkey And The Islamic Republic Of Pakistan, Istanbul, 5 December 2008

His Excellency Asıf Ali Zardari, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and His Excellency Abdullah Gül, the President of the Republic of Turkey, held bilateral talks in İstanbul on 5th December 2008, on the margins of the Summit Meeting of the trilateral Ankara Process among Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey that took place in İstanbul on 5th December 2008.

The Presidents praised the results of the official visit of His Excellency Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, to Turkey between 28-30 October 2008, upon the invitation of His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey.

The two Presidents had sincere and useful exchanges of views focusing on bilateral and international issues, reiterating their desire once again, to further develop their close friendship based on historical ties. They exchanged views on expanding their bilateral ties in various fields. They underlined the importance of frequent high level visits between the two countries.

They expressed their will to continue with a comprehensive cooperation in all areas which they believe contribute to peace, security and stability in the region. Both countires had extensive consultations on regional issues in the Middle East, Caucasia, West and South Asia.

With regard to the Mumbai tragedy, the two Presidents shared the sorrow of and expressed their solidarity with the people of India.They also reiterated their condemnation of these abhorrent terrorist attacks in the strongest terms, as leaders of two countries that have themselves suffered from terrorism.

President Gül appreciated Pakistan’s assurances of full cooperation with India, including in the intelligence field, and assistance to India in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous attack of terrorism to justice. Turkey stresses the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.
