Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu visited Moldova on 12-13 May 2012.
Foreign Minister Davutoğlu met with Mr. Iurie Leanca Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova and also received by Mr. Vladimir Filat, Prime Minister of Moldova and Mr. Nicolae Timofti, the President of Moldova. During the meetings, economic and cultural relations between Turkey and Moldova, visa exemption and EU issues were discussed; current regional and international developments were addressed.
Foreign Minister Davutoğlu and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, Mr. Leanca held a joint press conference. Foreign Minister Davutoğlu stated that Turkey and Moldova agreed in principle on the mutual exemption of visas and conclusion of the negotiations of Free Trade Agreement as soon as possible. He added that Turkey and Moldova are aiming at increasing bilateral trade volume up to 1 billion Dollars. Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Leanca underlined the importance of the visit as this year is the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He thanked Turkey for its assistance to Moldova up until now.
Foreign Minister Davutoğlu and Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Leanca also signed the Protocol on Inter-Archives Cooperation.
On the second day of his visit, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu visited Gagauz Autonomous Region.
Foreign Minister Davutoğlu and his delegation were welcomed traditionally with salt and bread in Komrat by Mihail Formuzal, Governor of Gagauz Autonomous Region. During the visit, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu visited Atatürk Library, Komrat State University, Süleyman Demirel Moldova Turkish High School, National Ethnography Museum and Gagauz Broadcasting Corporation. Foreign Minister Davutoğlu together with Governor Formuzal also attended a special mass in his honor at the Ivan Church of Gagauzian Turks.
The visit of Foreign Minister Davutoğlu was the first visit at the level of Foreign Ministers from Turkey to Moldova since the independence of Moldova.
