Foreign Minister Davutoğlu “Oppression in Syria is a test for the UN. We will see whether the UN will pass the test or not in the course of the time”

Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey paid a visit to Munich on 2-3 February 2013 with a view to attending the 49th International Munich Security Conference.

Speaking at the panel “Mali, Syria and Beyond: Dealing with Current Crises”, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu drew attention to the transitions in the region in recent years. He stressed that solutions in the Middle East and other regions depended on regional initiatives and timely responses of the international community to the crisis.

Pointed out that the UN Security Council reached agreement on Mali in a very short time Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said that despite the continuing developments in Syria in the past two years, the UN Security Council could not reach agreement.

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu emphasized that approximately two million Syrian people were living in hunger and unsheltered and said “Up until now we spent 500 million Dollars for Syrians in Turkey and we will continue to do so in case of need for our Syrian brothers and sisters. The UN should also take steps to deliver humanitarian assistance in Syria.”

“Syrian regime attacks its own people and country” emphasized Foreign Minister Davutoğlu and said that the oppression in Syria was a test for the UN and it would be seen whether the UN would pass the test or not in the course of the time.

Touching on the negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu pointed out that Turkey and Saudi Arabia should also participate in the negotiations and the format should be P5+3 in instead of P5 +1.

On the sidelines of the Munich Conference, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu had bilateral meetings with Gjorge Ivanov, President of Macedonia; Atifete Jahjaga, President of Kosovo, Joe Biden, U.S. Vice President, Ali Ekber Salihi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran and Vuc Jeremic, President of the UN General Assembly.
