The third “Ministerial Meeting of Syria-Bordering Countries” was held in Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan on May 4, 2014.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu emphasized that the most destructive humanitarian catastrophe of the decade is being witnessed in Syria.

Pointing out that the number of Syrians seeking refuge in Turkey has increased due to ongoing crisis in Syria, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu stated that “Humanitarian aid access in Syria should be allowed. The UN and its bodies should establish camps in Syria so that the flow of refugees can be controlled. The biggest obstacle is the Syrian regime, however, the United Nations Security Council should not wait the mercy of the Syrian regime’s mercy for this.”

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu stressed that the international initiatives failed in finding solution to the crisis in Syria and added that there are three major disappointments; Geneva-II conference ended without reaching any agreement, UN Security Council Resolution 2139 on the humanitarian assistance to Syria could not be implemented and the regional program adopted at the “Donors Conference” in Kuwait could not be carried out.

Noting that the international community do not pay enough attention to Syria, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu underlined that while Turkey has provided an assistance of 3 billion dollars to the Syrians refugees, the total assistance of the international community is about only 115 million dollars.

Touching on presidential elections to be held in Syria, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu recalled that 3 million Syrians have left their countries, 6 million Syrians were internally displaced and he questioned the validity of the elections during which approximately 10 million people cannot vote.

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu in Jordan also held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister of Jordan, Abdullah Ensour, Foreign Minister of Jordan, Nasser Judeh, Foreign Minister of Iraq, Hoshyar Zebari and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres.
