First Trilateral Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan held in Baku

The first Trilateral Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on 26 May 2014.

Within the framework of the meeting, the opportunities for developing cooperation at bilateral and regional levels in matters of common interest to all three countries, especially in the fields of energy and transportation were addressed and views were exchanged on international and regional developments.

At the Baku Statement issued following the meeting, Foreign Ministers expressed their satisfaction with the development of relations among the three countries and stressed the importance of further enhancing of cooperation in political, security, economic, trade, energy, transport and humanitarian fields.

Foreign Ministers declared that they agreed to continue consultations on regional and global issues of significant common interests among the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, also within the framework of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and other international and regional organizations and confirmed their readiness to support each other’s candidacies within the UN and other international organizations.

At the statement, Foreign Ministers also announced their decision to hold the second Trilateral Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in the second half of 2014 in Ashgabat.

Speaking at the joint press conference, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu pointed out that Turkey has always enjoyed good bilateral relations with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and stated that they want to further strengthen the relations through such mechanisms at the level of Presidents and Ministers.

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu noted that the three countries will work on a two year action plan until the next meeting to be held in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan and stressed that this plan marks the determination of the three countries about their trilateral cooperation. Emphasizing that as friendly countries, they will come together frequently like they did before and they will strive to secure peace and prosperity of countries in Caspian, Caucasia and the Central Asia, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said “As the countries in the center of Eurasia, we are determined to contribute to international peace. In this platform, an era which will also be benefited by all neighboring countries begins”.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu was received by President of Azerbaijan, H.E. İlham Aliyev and held bilateral meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Mr. Elmar Memmedyarov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Mr. Raşid Meredov.
