Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız met with Prof. Dr. Maria Böhmer, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany on 4 November 2016 in Ankara.
In the meeting, in addition to bilateral relations, issues such as recent developments in Syria and Iraq, migration crisis and fight against terrorism were discussed, and the necessity to maintain close contact in line with the multi-dimensional and deep-rooted character of Turkish-German relations was confirmed. The German side was briefed on the humanitarian aid provided to Syrians by Turkey, and our expectation from the EU in terms of effectiveness regarding the transfer of financial assistance under the Refugee Facility to alleviate the situation of Syrians in Turkey as well as the importance of adherence to the timeline that was previously agreed were underlined.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Yıldız reiterated Turkey’s strategic objective to become a full member of the EU. He also emphasized Turkey’s expectation from the EU to ensure the conclusion of the process of visa liberalization for Turkish citizens without further delay as provided by the 18 March Agreement.
Expressing her condolences for the Turkish citizens who lost their lives during the foiled coup attempt of 15 July, State Minister Prof. Dr. Böhmer stated that she shares the sorrow of the Turkish people and that the meaning of democracy has become once again clear. State Minister Prof. Dr. Böhmer also commended the exemplary steps taken by Turkey for Syrians which set an example for humanity, expressed Germany’s appreciation for Turkey’s humanitarian approach and stressed that Germany will continue to support Turkey’s efforts in this regard.
