Relations between Türkiye and Switzerland

Bilateral diplomatic relations with Switzerland started with the opening of a consulate in Geneva in 1898 and continued with the accreditation of the Ottoman Empire's Ambassador in Brussels to Switzerland in 1900. As of 1915, the Ottoman Empire has appointed an Ambassador to Switzerland with residence in Bern.

Relations continued during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, and the Embassy in Bern, was administered at the level of Chargé d’Affaires after the proclamation of the Republic.

In 1925, Mehmet Münir Ertegün, as the first Envoy of the Republic of Türkiye to Switzerland, presented his letter of credentials. The same year, an “Agreement of Friendship” between the Republic of Türkiye and Switzerland was signed. Switzerland, on the other hand, opened its first diplomatic mission in Istanbul in 1928. The Swiss mission in Istanbul was moved to Ankara in 1934 and became an Embassy in 1957.

The Turkish community in Switzerland, with its around 140.000 members, constitutes a key element in the relations between Türkiye and Switzerland.

Bilateral relations with Switzerland are developing positively, in line with reciprocal high-level visits. Former President Pascal Couchepin visited Türkiye in 2008. In November 2010, former President Abdullah Gül paid an official visit to Switzerland. Following these visits, former President Micheline Calmy-Rey came to Türkiye on 26-27 December 2011 to make a speech at the Ambassadors Conference.

Federal Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis paid an official visit to Türkiye on 12 July 2019. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu visited Switzerland on 14 August 2020.
