Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Myanmar were established in 1958.
The Turkish Embassy in Bangkok was accredited to Myanmar until the Embassy
in Myanmar came into operation on 9 March 2012. Myanmar does not have a
resident Embassy in Türkiye. The Myanmar Embassy in Cairo is accredited to
Türkiye.
Prior to the February 2021 coup, Türkiye supported Myanmar’s democratic
transition efforts to build peace and economic development.
Türkiye attaches importance to peace and prosperity in Myanmar and closely
follows the deep democratic and humanitarian crisis that has claimed the
lives of thousands of civilians.
Türkiye also attaches significant importance to the situation of the
Muslims in Myanmar, in particular Rohingya. Türkiye has been closely
monitoring the situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar since 2012 and has
expressed its deep concern about the ongoing humanitarian crisis, which has
already led to the exodus of more than 730.000 Rohingya to Bangladesh.
Türkiye has also been playing a leading role in all relevant international
bodies to draw the attention of the international community to the
humanitarian plight of Rohingya.
There are two war cemeteries of Turkish soldiers who were captured by the
British during WWI. These soldiers were brought to Myanmar and lost their
lives in this country that was once a British colony. The war cemetery in
Thayet is reconstructed and was opened in 2016. Restoration process of the
second war cemetery in Meikhtila is expected to start at a later date.
More than 100 students from Myanmar have benefitted from the scholarships
granted by Türkiye and studied in Türkiye since 1992.
