The elections for non-permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council for the period 2015-2016, for which Turkey is also a candidate, will be held in New York on 16 October 2014 at the UN General Assembly.

Turkey contributes comprehensively to a wide range of issues on the agenda of the United Nations, from climate change to human rights, from development to peacekeeping operations, from global health security to counter-terrorism. Turkey supports and is an advocate of the UN, its specialized agencies as well as the values the UN represents.

Having served on the UN Security Council during 2009-2010, Turkey announced its candidature from the Western European and Other States Group on 18 May 2011, in light of the significant developments emerging in our region and the world in the realms of peace, stability and security. Spain and New Zealand are also candidates for the two seats allocated to this Group for the same term.

With the election day approaching, Foreign Minister Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will visit New York on 10-17 October 2014 in order to have further contacts and to draw the attention of the UN Member States once again to Turkey’s candidature.

The contacts of Foreign Minister Mr.Çavuşoğlu on the occasion of this visit will allow for the follow-up of the issues discussed both at the bilateral and multilateral levels during the 69th Session of United Nations General Assembly held between 22 September-1 October 2014, and will provide a further opportunity to strongly emphasize Turkey's candidature.

Foreign Minister Mr. Çavuşoğlu will chair the Meeting of the Consuls General in North America on 11 October 2014 and will meet with the representatives of the Turkish non-governmental organizations in the USA during the visit.

Foreign Minister Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will also inaugurate the 'Safe Harbor Turkey Exhibition', depicting various communities which sought shelter in the territories of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey throughout history. The exhibition will be open to visitors at the UN Headquarters on 13-22 October.
