Bilateral Political Relations between Türkiye and Qatar

Türkiye enjoys deep-rooted ties of friendship and fraternity with Qatar and relations between the two countries have been rapidly improving in all fields. While bilateral visits add a major impetus to relations between Türkiye and Qatar, both countries also closely coordinate and cooperate on regional issues.

Annual meetings of “The Supreme Strategic Committee”, established in 2014 as a bilateral mechanism to form the institutional basis of high-level dialogue and cooperation between Türkiye and Qatar, are co-chaired by H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Emir of Qatar H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. In this regard, the first meeting of the Committee was held in Doha on 2 December 2015, the second and third meetings were convened respectively in Trabzon and Doha on 18 December 2016 and 14-15 November 2017, and most recently the fourth meeting was held in Istanbul on 26 November 2018. On the occasion of those meetings, numerous agreements, protocols and memoranda of understanding were signed, which further strengthen the cooperation between Türkiye and Qatar in various fields.

The first round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries were held on 4 October 2018 in Ankara under the co-chairmanship of Ambassador Sedat Önal, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, and Ahmad bin Hassan El Hammadi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar.
