Joint Declaration on the 90th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between The Republic Of Turkey And The United Mexican States

Today, July 12th, we are celebrating the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Turkey and the United Mexican States with the determination to further consolidate the multidimensional relationship that our countries have enjoyed so far.

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Mexico were established by the Friendship Agreement, which was signed in Rome on 25 May 1927 and entered into force on 12 July 1928.

The historical visits of both the Mexican President, H. E. Enrique Pena Nieto, and the Turkish President, H. E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in 2013 and 2015, respectively, marked important milestones in our relations.

With the signing of the “Strategic Cooperation and Partnership Framework for the XXIst. Century” on 17 December 2013, Turkey and Mexico inaugurated a new era in their bilateral relations by upgrading their relationship to the level of a strategic partnership.

Commercial and economic relations between Turkey and Mexico are increasing in line with the spirit of our strategic partnership. It is pleasing that the bilateral trade volume doubled in the last decade and continues to grow.

Enhanced cooperation between the two countries has contributed a lot to global affairs, going beyond the sphere of bilateral relations. Turkey and Mexico are close cooperation partners at the UN and actively maintain global economic cooperation and coordination within platforms such as the G20 and the OECD, of which both are members.

Turkey and Mexico also closely cooperate within the scope of MIKTA, an important international cooperation and coordination platform. Turkey, in coordination with Mexico, participates in the works of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) as an Observer, as part of its outreach policy towards the LAC region.

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Turkey and Mexico are determined to improve bilateral relations and to strengthen existing friendship and cooperation ties, as well as to take further their consolidated friendship relations in the coming years.
