Relations between Türkiye and Papua New Guinea

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye -Papua New Guinea were established on 30 May 1979.

Turkish Embassy in Canberra is accredited to Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea has an Honorary Consulate in Istanbul. In accordance with the decision (2017/9861) of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Türkiye, Türkiye has officialy informed Papua New Guinea about her plan to open a resident Embassy in Port Moresby and approval has been requested from the authorities of the Papua New Guinea.

No bilateral high-level visit between Türkiye and Papua New Guinea has been conducted so far.
However, former Papua New Guinean Foreign Minister Hon. Samuel Abal attended the Türkiye -Pacific Islands Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting held on 9-11 April 2008 in Istanbul; and Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Winnie Kiap attended the World Humanitarian Summit which was held in Istanbul on 23-24 May 2016.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a remarkable diversity of geographic and natural resources. However, difficult geographical conditions hamper the exploitation of these resources. The agricultural, forestry, and fishing sector accounts for most (around %85) of the labour force of Papua New Guinea, while the minerals and energy extraction sector is responsible for most (around %60) of the export earnings.

According to the World Bank data, GDP of Papua New Guinea in 2020 is around 24 billion USD. According to the data of TUIK (Turkish Statistical Institute), total trade volume between Türkiye and Papua New Guinea is over 5 million USD.
