The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) 4th Extraordinary Summit was held in Mecca on 15-16 August 2012. The Kings of Bahrain and Jordan, Presidents of Egypt, Yemen, Pakistan, Tunis, Nigeria, Chad, Somalia, Gabon, Sudan, Bangladesh, Uganda as well as President of Republic of Turkey, H.E Abdullah Gül participated in the Summit. Furthermore, Prime Minister of Malaysia and a number of Foreign Ministers attended the meeting.

Membership of Syria was suspended by the OIC leaders at the Summit where deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and the problems of various Muslim countries and communities, mainly Palestine, Myanmar, Sudan and Mali were discussed.

Speaking at the Summit President Gül said that Syrian regime waged war against its own people and wielded heavy weapons which claimed outnumbered lives and emphasized that it is crucial for all the OIC members to display their resoluteness so that this process will not last any longer. President Gül suggested holding the 13th OIC Summit in Turkey.

At the OIC Foreign Ministers’ preparatory meeting in Jeddah ahead of the Summit, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu shared his impressions of Myanmar during his visit. Pointing out the deplorable situation of Rohingya Muslims, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said that the long term development efforts should be given priority in the Rakhine region. Foreign Minister Davutoğlu stressed the importance of Secretary General’s visit to Myanmar and called on the OIC members and their Red Crescents for immediate assistance to the Rakhine region. Turkish Embassy to Myanmar is ready to provide assistance for distributing all sort of aids, said Foreign Minister Davutoğlu, pointing to the importance of a coordinated action. Foreign Minister Davutoğlu proposed developing a OIC joint action plan and establishing a OIC Contact Group on Rakhine which will hold its first meeting during the UN General Assembly in New York.
