Political Relations
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations with Czechoslovakia in
1924, Türkiye-Czech Republic relations have always been friendly with the
exception of the cessation of diplomatic relations from 1939 to 1945,
during German occupation of Czechoslovakia followed by the stagnant period
during the Cold War era.
There has been a steady improvement in bilateral relations since 1989,
following Czechoslovakia’s successful democratic transition. After
Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved into its constituent states, Türkiye
recognized the Czech Republic, which was established on 1 January 1993, on
the same day.
The last official visits at the presidential level were made to Czechia in
May 2009 and to Türkiye in February 2012.
The visit of Former Prime Minister Andrej Babišt to Türkiye on 2-4
September 2019 was the last official visit at this level.
Former Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek visited Türkiye on 13 December
2016. Minister Çavuşoğlu paid an official visit to Czechia on 10-11 June
2022. This was the first visit to Czechia after 13 years at the foreign
ministerial level.

Our joint target for bilateral trade volume with Czechia has been set at 5
billion dollars. Bilateral trade volume reached 4.35 billion dollars in
2021. In the first 10 months of 2022, this figure was recorded as 3.91
million dollars.
The 7th session of the Türkiye-Czechia Joint Economic Commission was held
in Prague on 17 October 2019.
The Joint Committee on Economy and Trade (JETCO) between Türkiye and the
Czech Republic was established with the declaration signed on 17 June 2021.
The First Meeting of the Mechanism, together with a business forum was held
in Türkiye on 20-21 October 2022 under the co-chairmanship of Türkiye’s
Minister of Trade and Czechia’s Minister of Industry and Trade.
Direct investments from Czechia to Türkiye during 2002-2022 September have
amounted to 655 million Dollars. There are 86 Czech companies active in
Türkiye. They are predominantly focused on energy and pharmaceutical
sectors.
Direct investments from Türkiye to Czechia during 2002-2022 September have
amounted to 21 million Dollars. 98 Turkish companies are currently
operational in Czechia. They are mostly small-scale/artisan enterprises
active in trade and services such as "fast food", tourism, textile and
gift.
Türkiye has become the most preferred tourism destination of Czech citizens
in 2019, with approximately 311 thousand visitors. As of October 2022,
almost 285 thousand Czech tourists visited Türkiye.
Cultural, Educational and Consular Relations
A Turcology Department offering education at undergraduate, graduate and
doctorate levels, started its operations in 2008 at Prague Charles
University, one of the oldest universities in the Czech Republic and
Europe.
Under Erasmus+ program, Czechia is the fifth popular country for Turkish
students. In the period 2014-2021, 5,758 Turkish students studied in
Czechia and 924 Czech students studied in Türkiye.
Approximately 4.500 Turkish citizens are currently residing in the Czech
Republic.
The martyrs of the 15th Army corps who fought during the First World War at
the Galician front lie in the martyrdoms in the cities of Pardubice (508),
Hodonin (387) and Vallaske Mezirici (295).
In addition to our Embassy in Prague, we have Honorary Consulates in
Ostrava and Brno.
Czechia has an Embassy in Ankara, Consulate General in Istanbul and
Honorary Consulates in Mersin and Antalya.
