Relations between Türkiye and Tanzania

Turkish Embassy in Dar es Salaam was opened in October 1979 but later closed in 1984 due to budgetary considerations. It was reopened on May 18, 2009. The Tanzanian Embassy in Ankara began its activities in February 2017.

Bilateral relations have gained momentum with the increase in high-level visits.

President H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Tanzania on January 22-23, 2017 as part of his East Africa tour. Ten agreements were signed on the occasion of the visit.

Tanzanian President H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan paid an official visit to Türkiye between April 18-21, 2024. During the visit, six agreements/memoranda of understanding were signed in the fields of education, investment, diaspora and archives.

Our trade volume with Tanzania was recorded as 284 million USD in 2024; of which 217 million USD worth is Turkish exports.

The reopening of our Embassy in Dar es Salaam in 2009 and the start of direct flights by Turkish Airlines between Istanbul and Dar es Salaam on June 14, 2010, and between Istanbul and Kilimanjaro on December 4, 2012 had positive impact on our trade volume with Tanzania.

Leading items in Türkiye’s exports to Tanzania are machinery and heavy industry products. Tobacco, oil seeds and fruits, and aquatic products constitute the main items in our imports from Tanzania. The amount of investment of our Turkish business people in Tanzania is around 40 million US dollars.

Within the scope of Türkiye Scholarships, 394 Tanzanian students were granted higher education scholarships between 2000-2024.
