Relations between Türkiye and Suriname

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Suriname were established in 1976. Due to geographical distance, the relations between the two countries remained limited in the past. However, following Türkiye's outreach policy towards the Latin America and Caribbean region, the bilateral relations began to develop further.

Political relations between Türkiye and Suriname are mostly focused on multilateral cooperation through organizations such as the UN, CARICOM, CELAC and the OIC. Türkiye and Suriname has established a cooperation mechanism in multilateral platforms and lend their support to each other for international candidatures particularly at the UN.

Suriname's former Vice President H.E. Robert Ameerali paid a visit to Türkiye on 6-9 March 2013.

The then Foreign Minister H.E. Niermala Badrising visited Istanbul on 14-15 April 2016 to participate in the 13th Islamic Summit of the OIC and had a meeting with Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had a meeting with his counterpart Foreign Minister H.E. Yildiz Pollack-Beighle at the margins of the 44th Session of the Council of Ministers of the OIC in Abijan on 10 July 2017.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to Suriname on 20-21 September 2018 and was received by H.E. President Desire Delano Boutarse. This was the first visit at the Foreign Minister level from Türkiye to Surinam.

The Turkish Embassy in Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago) is accredited to Suriname. Türkiye also has an Honorary Consulate in Paramaribo whereas Suriname has Honorary Consulates in Ankara and Istanbul.

The bilateral trade volume amounted to 18,2 million USD in 2019. (Türkiye’s exports:18,1 million USD, Türkiye’s imports:0,1 million USD)
