Turkish-Sierra Leonean relations were established in 1971. Turkish Embassy
in Freetown commenced its operations as of 1 February 2018. Sierra Leone
has opened an embassy in Ankara in the beginning of 2020.
Türkiye has been member to UN Peacebuilding Commission Sierra Leone
Configuration since April, 2012.
Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of Sierra Leone paid an official visit
to Türkiye between 9-11 May 2017. This was the first ever presidential visit
form Sierra Leone to Türkiye. Former President Koroma was accompanied by
Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy, Finance, Mineral Resources,
Education, Youth and Sports, Information and Communication.
H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Nabeela
Tunis paid an official visit to Türkiye between 15-16 August 2019.
The 2017 bilateral trade volume of 51.5 million USD rose to 55.3 million
USD in 2018. Bilateral trade volume was recorded as 53,4 million USD in
2019. Primary goods exported from Türkiye are flour, sugar, iron and steel
products, cement, various food products, cable, plastic wrap. Turkish
imports mainly consist of hulk, titanium and leather products.
Turkish Airlines flies from İstanbul to Freetown 3 times a week.
Through Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Türkiye is
providing development assistance to Sierra Leone in various domains.
Since 1992, government of Türkiye grants scholarships to students from
Sierra Leone.
